SHORT -A and LONG -A
This lesson consists of words having four spelling patterns that create long /a/ and short /a/ sounds. The first category of words has the short /a/ sound with the spelling pattern of CVC (a vowel surrounded by consonants). Category two words have the long /a/ sound made by the silent e at the end of the words, shown by CVCe. Category three words are also long /a/ sounds made with the ai vowel blend, shown by CVVC-ai. The last category is also long /a/ sounds made with the ay spelling pattern, shown by CVV-ay.
