SHORT -A and LONG -A

This lesson consists of words having four spelling patterns that create long /a/ and short /a/ sounds.  The first category of words has the short /a/ sound with the spelling pattern of CVC (a vowel surrounded by consonants).  Category two words have the long /a/ sound made by the silent e at the end of the words, shown by CVCe.  Category three words are also long /a/ sounds made with the ai vowel blend, shown by CVVC-ai.  The last category is also long /a/ sounds made with the ay spelling pattern, shown by CVV-ay.

Sort words having a short /a/ sound like "glass" under CVC.

Sort words having a long /a/ sound like "trade" made with a silent e under CVC-e.

Sort words having a long /a/ sound like "Spain" made using ai under CVVC - ai.

Sort words having a long /a/ sound like "stay" made using ay under CVV-ay.
