SHORT and LONG /e/

This lesson consists of words that have short and long /e/ sounds using three different spelling patterns.  Pay close attention to two of the sorts which have the exact spelling pattern of CVVC-ea, but have different /e/ sounds.

Sort words having a short /e/ sound with a CVC pattern like "when" under CVC.

Sort words having a long /e/ sound with a CVC-ea pattern like "seat" under CVVC-ea.

Sort words having a short /e/ sound with a CVVC-ea pattern like "dead" under CVVC-ea.

Sort words having a long /e/ sound with a CVVC-ee pattern like "trees" under CVVC-ee.

Sort words not fitting any of these patterns under Oddballs.
