"Words Their Way" spelling is a leveled spelling program based on the belief that students advance in spelling only when they learn and understand the spelling patterns in a series of stages.  These stages are as follows:

LNA - Letter Name Alphabetic

WWP - Within Word Pattern

SA - Syllables and Affixes

DER - Derivational

There are three sections within each stage, Early, Middle, and Late.  For example, WWP Early, WWP Middle, and WWP Late.  Students entering 5th grade are expected to be in the SA Late stage.  A "Spelling Inventory" test consisting of 25 carefully chosen words is administered to determine the approximate spelling stage of students.  Lists are then given that most closely proximate spelling needs in order to advance students to the next stage.  Another "Spelling Inventory" test is administered mid-year to re-assess stage advancement.
